Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the relationship between these characteristics, nurse burnout, and intent to leave.

  • Cross-sectional study involving 2592 nurses across Ministry of Health and private hospitals in Istanbul.
  • Data collected via demographic questionnaire, Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index, and Maslach Burnout Inventory.

Main Results:

  • Nearly half of nurses experienced high emotional exhaustion and low personal accomplishment; one-third reported depersonalization and intent to leave within a year.
  • Poor nursing practice environments were the primary driver of increased burnout across all dimensions.
  • Burnout and poor practice environments correlated with a higher intention to leave; permanent positions were associated with decreased intent to leave.

Conclusions:

  • A significant relationship exists between poor nursing practice environments and adverse nursing outcomes in Turkey.
  • Addressing poor practice environments and enhancing job security are vital for improving nursing retention and outcomes.
  • Policymakers and nurse managers must prioritize these issues to mitigate burnout and turnover.
