  • To evaluate the impact of different VP training modalities on student empathy.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy medical students were randomized into three groups: control VP, VP with backstory, and empathy-feedback VP.
  • Students subsequently interacted with a standardized patient (SP) portraying a scenario requiring empathy.
  • Empathic communication was assessed using the Empathic Communication Coding System and SP ratings.

  • The empathy-feedback VP group demonstrated significantly higher empathy scores in SP interactions compared to the backstory VP and control groups.
  • Trained assessors noted higher empathy in the empathy-feedback VP group (2.91) versus backstory (2.20) and control (2.27) groups.
  • Standardized patients rated the empathy-feedback and backstory VP groups higher in empathic statements, warmth, and rapport compared to the control.

Conclusions:

  • Immediate feedback via a virtual patient significantly enhances medical students' empathic communication skills.
  • Virtual patient interventions, particularly with feedback, improve empathy as perceived by both assessors and standardized patients.
  • Simulation-based training using virtual patients is a viable method for developing crucial physician empathy.
