Stroke significantly impacts patients' ability to return to work, even with functional independence.
Understanding factors influencing return to work is crucial for effective post-stroke management.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the return to work status of patients with first-ever stroke who achieved functional independence at 6 months post-stroke.
To identify factors associated with return to work in this population.

Main Methods:

Prospective cohort study involving 933 patients with functional independence at 6 months post-stroke.
Data collected via medical record review, self-administered questionnaires, and face-to-face interviews.
Assessment of occupational status, quality of life, and emotional status at 6 months post-stroke.

Main Results:

60.0% of functionally independent stroke patients returned to work at 6 months.
Independent predictors for return to work included sex, age, educational level, and comorbidity.
Patients who returned to work reported better emotional status compared to those who did not.

Conclusions:

A significant proportion of stroke survivors remain unemployed despite functional recovery.
Targeted vocational rehabilitation programs and employer education are recommended to improve return to work rates.
Addressing emotional well-being may also play a role in facilitating return to employment.
