In statistics, several tools are used to interpret the data. Measures of central tendency represent the characteristics of the data, such as mean, median, and mode. Additionally, measures of variance like standard deviation and range are used to find the spread of data from the mean. Relative standing measures the distance between data locations. Commonly used measures of relative standings are percentile, z score, and quartiles.
Percentiles are a type of fractile that partition data into...

Data are individual items of information obtained from a population or sample. Data may be classified as qualitative (categorical), quantitative continuous, or quantitative discrete. Because it is not practical to measure the entire population in a study, researchers use samples to represent the population. A random sample is a representative group from the population chosen by using a method that gives each individual in the population an equal chance of being included in the sample. Random...

Synthesis of new DNA molecules is carried out by the enzyme DNA polymerase, which adds nucleotides on the daughter strand complementary to the template DNA strand. DNA polymerase has a higher affinity to add the correct base and ensures fidelity during DNA replication. Furthermore,  it exhibits proofreading activity during replication, using an exonuclease domain that cuts off incorrect nucleotides from the nascent DNA strand.
Errors During Replication are Corrected by the DNA Polymerase...

In eukaryotic cells, transcripts made by RNA polymerase are modified and processed before exiting the nucleus. Unprocessed RNA is called precursor mRNA or pre-mRNA to distinguish it from mature mRNA.
Once about 20-40 ribonucleotides have been joined together by RNA polymerase, a group of enzymes adds a “cap” to the 5’ end of the growing transcript. In this process, a 5’ phosphate is replaced by modified guanosine that has a methyl group attached to it (7-Methyl...

Summary

Manuscript peer review is crucial for scientific integrity, yet lacks objective guidance. This perspective synthesizes experience to inform the peer review process for better science evaluation.

Area of Science:

  • Scientific Publishing
  • Research Integrity

Background:

  • Manuscript peer review is essential for scientific evaluation and dissemination.
  • Objective evidence guiding peer review is limited.
  • Current practices rely heavily on experience and mentorship.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide a perspective on the manuscript peer review process.
  • To offer insights based on practical experience in scientific publishing.

Main Methods:

  • The author's perspective is based on personal experience as a reviewer and author.
  • Mentorship and feedback from seasoned reviewers inform the presented views.
