[Pregnancy wish and folic acid supplements]
Abstract:
Folic acid is best known as the vitamin used to prevent neural tube defects during fetal development. Women who are planning a pregnancy best start with a daily intake of 0,4 mg of folic acid until at least 12 weeks after conception. Women at increased risk of having a child with a neural tube defect are recommended a daily dose of 4 mg until after the first 3 months of pregnancy. Pharmacists are well placed to inform women of childbearing age in person. Risk groups such as adolescents, low-skilled women or women of foreign origin need extra attention.
