Parentral Nutrition: Centeral and Peripheral Parental Nutrition

1.5K
Parenteral Nutrition (PN) delivers essential nutrients directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system. It is commonly used for individuals with severe digestive disorders or conditions that prevent normal nutrient absorption.
PN can be administered through two primary routes:
1. Central Parenteral Nutrition (CPN):
CPN involves delivering a high concentration of nutrients through a large vein. This is typically achieved using a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) or,...

z Scores and Area Under the Curve01:17

z Scores and Area Under the Curve

20.2K
z scores are the standardized values obtained after converting a normal distribution into a standard normal distribution. A z score is measured in units of the standard deviation. The z score tells you how many standard deviations the value x is above (to the right of) or below (to the left of) the mean, μ. Values of x that are larger than the mean have positive z scores, and values of x that are smaller than the mean have negative z scores. If x equals the mean, then x has a z score of...

Summary

Food insecurity, indicated by receiving SNAP benefits, was linked to higher child weight-for-length. Children consuming desserts also showed increased odds of being overweight, highlighting dietary factors in childhood obesity.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Nutrition
  • Public Health
  • Childhood Obesity Research

Background:

  • Overconsumption of energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods is a potential driver of childhood obesity.
  • This study investigates the association between food security indicators, maternal weight, and child overweight/obesity.
  • Previous research on food security and children's weight has yielded inconsistent findings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the relationship between food security, maternal weight, and child overweight/obesity.
  • To test the hypothesis that specific dietary patterns and food security status are associated with increased child weight.

Main Methods:

  • Secondary data analysis of 240 mother-child dyads from a study on low-income, minority children.
  • Eligibility criteria included Hispanic ethnicity, child age 12-24 months, WIC enrollment, and absence of major diseases.
  • Multivariate logistic regression analyzed associations between child weight-for-length, food security (SNAP receipt), maternal weight, and dietary intake (sugar-sweetened beverages, desserts, fatty meats).

Main Results:

  • Receiving SNAP benefits was positively associated with child weight-for-length (OR=2.01, 95% CI=1.04-3.90).
  • Children consuming desserts were 2.87 times more likely to be overweight (95% CI=1.19-6.88).
  • Higher caloric intake was significantly associated with increased child weight-for-length (OR=1.00, 95% CI=1.00-1.00).

Conclusions:

  • Food insecurity, indicated by SNAP receipt, was associated with higher child weight-for-length in this sample.
  • Dietary factors, such as dessert consumption, are significant predictors of childhood overweight.
  • Future research should explore the interplay between food security, hunger, and satiety cues in relation to child weight.
