Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Radiology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Idiopathic intussusception is uncommon in adults, unlike in children.
  • Adult intussusception often presents with atypical symptoms, posing diagnostic challenges.

Observation:

  • A 29-year-old woman presented with a clinically atypical case of colo-colic intussusception.
  • Diagnostic modalities included conventional plain x-ray films, sonography, coloscopy, and enema.

Findings:

  • No underlying tumorous cause was identified for the intussusception.
  • Successful non-surgical reduction of the intussusception was achieved using a water-soluble contrast enema.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering intussusception in adults, even with atypical presentations.
  • Non-surgical reduction with water-soluble contrast enema can be an effective treatment modality for idiopathic adult intussusception when no obstruction or malignancy is evident.
