This study identified a new gene variant, rs7680948 in the SETD7 gene, linked to higher serum lycopene levels. This finding may help understand the genetic factors influencing lycopene and its role in preventing prostate cancer.
Area of Science:
- Nutritional Genomics
- Human Genetics
- Cancer Epidemiology
Background:
- Higher serum lycopene concentrations are linked to reduced risk of prostate cancer and other chronic diseases.
- Serum lycopene levels are influenced by both diet and genetic factors.
- Understanding genetic determinants of lycopene is crucial for public health initiatives.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify genetic predictors of serum lycopene concentrations using a genome-wide association study (GWAS).
- To investigate the genetic basis of lycopene levels in a controlled dietary setting.
- To explore novel genetic loci associated with serum lycopene.
Main Methods:
- Genome-wide association study (GWAS) approach.
- Analysis of 441 Old Order Amish adults with controlled dietary intake.
- Linear regression models to assess associations between genetic variants and serum lycopene.
Main Results:
- A novel genetic variant, rs7680948 on chromosome 4 within the SETD7 gene, showed a significant association with serum lycopene concentrations (p = 3.41 × 10(-9)).
- Nominal support was found for an association between SCARB1 and serum lycopene, using a different single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP).
- Identification of a novel locus potentially regulating serum lycopene levels.
Conclusions:
- The SETD7 gene represents a novel genetic locus associated with serum lycopene concentrations.
- The findings suggest a potential mechanistic link between SETD7, lycopene, and prostate cancer risk.
- Further research is warranted to elucidate the relationship between SETD7 and lycopene metabolism and their impact on health outcomes.
