Summary

Singapore's Early Psychosis Intervention Programme (EPIP) significantly reduced duration of untreated psychosis (DUP). Most patients achieved remission, improved functioning, and returned to work or school within two years.

Background:

  • The Early Psychosis Intervention Programme (EPIP) was established in 2001 to address this issue.
  • EPIP integrated into the National Mental Health Blueprint in 2007.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report on the outcomes of the Early Psychosis Intervention Programme (EPIP).
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a national early psychosis intervention strategy.

Main Methods:

  • Inclusion criteria: 15-41 years, first-episode psychosis, minimal prior treatment, no substance abuse, no major medical/neurological illness.
  • Data collected from consecutive patients admitted to EPIP between April 2007 and March 2011.
  • Utilized structured assessments and hospital data systems for evaluation.

Main Results:

  • 815 patients accepted; 795 had baseline data. Mean age 27 years; 50.8% male.
  • Mean duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) was 14.6 months (median 6 months).
  • At two years: 71.1% achieved symptomatic remission, 84.9% had improved Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scores, and 76.5% returned to education or employment.

Conclusions:

  • EPIP, as a national program, demonstrates accountability through articulated process and outcome indicators.
  • Periodic reporting ensures transparency and accountability to funders, patients, and families.
  • The program shows positive results in improving outcomes for individuals with early psychosis.
