Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Slit lamp biomicroscopy with a convex lens is crucial for retinal examination.
  • Imaging peripheral and large retinal areas can be challenging with standard equipment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a method for imaging the entire retina, including peripheral regions, using a video-slit lamp and freely available software.
  • To enable ophthalmologists to monitor pathological fundus findings without high-end imaging equipment.

Main Methods:

  • Recording routine fundus examinations with a slit lamp and a +90 D lens on video.
  • Identifying sharp still images from the video sequence.
  • Utilizing the Hugin software for digital stitching of images into panoramic retinal overviews.

Main Results:

  • Panoramic retinal overviews extending to the equator were successfully created.
  • The method allows for imaging diseases affecting the entire retina or its periphery.
  • Demonstrated a novel approach for video-slit lamp imaging of the fundus using a hand-held non-contact lens.

Conclusions:

  • The presented method provides a cost-effective way to perform comprehensive fundus examinations.
  • This technique facilitates the documentation of peripheral retinal findings, potentially aiding in disease monitoring and diagnosis.
  • Offers a valuable alternative for ophthalmologists lacking advanced imaging technology.
