Summary

New bisegmented double-stranded (ds) RNA viruses were found in Brazilian pigs. These viruses, similar to picobirnaviruses, were detected in 15.3% of pigs with diarrhea, suggesting a potential link to the illness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence of bisegmented dsRNA viruses in fecal samples from pigs in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
  • To determine if there is an association between these viruses and diarrhea in pigs.
  • To characterize the detected viruses using molecular techniques.

  • Fecal samples were collected from 912 pigs of various breeds and ages (9-61 days) in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
