Elevated Plasma Homocysteine Concentration in Opium-Addicted Individuals

Opium addiction is linked to higher homocysteine levels, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. This study highlights a significant association between opium use and elevated homocysteine, increasing the risk of hyperhomocysteinemia.

- Opium addiction was strongly associated with elevated homocysteine levels (OR = 8.244) and predicted higher homocysteine concentrations (beta = 3.524).

- Opium consumption is strongly associated with elevated plasma homocysteine concentrations.
- Opium addiction increases the risk of developing hyperhomocysteinemia, a potential contributor to cardiovascular disease.
