Genetic variations in the adiponectin gene (ADIPOQ) were studied in relation to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs17300539 and rs1501299 were found to be associated with an increased risk of developing PCOS.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Endocrinology
- Reproductive Medicine
Background:
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder.
- Adiponectin (ADIPOQ) plays a role in metabolic and reproductive functions.
- Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in ADIPOQ may influence PCOS susceptibility.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the frequencies of four ADIPOQ gene SNPs (rs17300539, rs12495941, rs2241766, rs1501299).
- To determine the association between these ADIPOQ SNPs and the pathogenesis of PCOS.
Main Methods:
- Genomic DNA was extracted from 207 women with PCOS and 192 controls.
- PCR amplification and direct sequencing were used to analyze four specific ADIPOQ SNPs.
- Genotype and allele frequencies were compared between PCOS patients and controls.
Main Results:
- Significant differences in genotype and allele frequencies were observed for rs17300539 and rs1501299 between PCOS cases and controls.
- The AA genotype of rs17300539 and the CC genotype of rs1501299 were associated with an increased risk of PCOS.
- No significant associations were found for SNPs rs2241766 and rs12495941.
Conclusions:
- ADIPOQ gene variants rs17300539 and rs1501299 are associated with PCOS.
- These SNPs may represent susceptibility loci for PCOS.
- Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise mechanisms.
