Insights

Plasma vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is elevated in unstable angina pectoris (UAP) patients. Higher VEGF levels correlate with coronary artery stenosis and poorer vascular function, suggesting its potential as a biomarker.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Vascular Biology

Background:

  • Unstable angina pectoris (UAP) is a critical manifestation of coronary heart disease (CHD).
  • Understanding the underlying biochemical markers is crucial for diagnosis and risk stratification.
  • Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a role in angiogenesis and vascular integrity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate plasma vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in patients with unstable angina pectoris (UAP).
  • To identify factors associated with elevated VEGF in UAP patients.
  • To explore the potential of VEGF as a biomarker for coronary artery lesions.

Main Methods:

  • 108 patients with chest pain were categorized into UAP (n=78) and non-CHD (n=30) groups based on coronary angiography.
  • Plasma VEGF levels, homocysteine (Hcy), serum lipids, and reactive hyperemia index (RHI) were measured.
  • Gensini score assessed coronary artery stenosis severity; multiple linear regression analyzed VEGF correlations.

Main Results:

  • UAP patients exhibited significantly higher plasma VEGF levels (102.1 ± 55.7 ng/L vs. 80.9 ± 38.1 ng/L) and lower RHI (1.53 ± 0.27 vs. 1.65 ± 0.32) compared to the non-CHD group.
  • Higher triglyceride and Hcy levels were observed in the UAP group.
  • VEGF levels significantly correlated with the degree of coronary artery stenosis, Gensini score, and RHI.

Conclusions:

  • Plasma VEGF levels are significantly elevated in patients with unstable angina pectoris (UAP).
  • VEGF is significantly associated with coronary artery stenosis severity and impaired vascular function (RHI).
  • VEGF may serve as a novel biochemical indicator for assessing coronary artery lesions in UAP patients.
