  • Visual crowding impairs object recognition in peripheral vision.
  • Previous research shows crowding doesn't block semantic activation of single words.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if unrecognized words under visual crowding can be temporally integrated into phrases.
  • To determine if unconscious multi-word integration occurs.

Main Methods:

  • Behavioral and Event-Related Potential (ERP) measures were used.
  • Participants processed Chinese four-word idioms and two-word combinations presented word-by-word.
  • Stimuli were either crowded or non-crowded.

Main Results:

  • A congruency effect, indicating semantic integration, was observed only in the non-crowded condition.
  • No evidence for unconscious multi-word integration was found, even for simple two-word combinations.
  • Temporal semantic integration did not occur under visual crowding.

Conclusions:

  • Integration of temporally separated words into a semantic context may necessitate conscious awareness.
  • Unconscious processing of crowded words does not extend to multi-word temporal integration under tested conditions.
