    Summary

    Dentoalveolar morphology, or tooth and jaw structure, showed correlations with head and neck posture in Danish males. These findings suggest compensatory adaptations in the jaw and teeth related to head positioning.

    Background:

    • Dentoalveolar morphology and its relationship with head and cervical column posture are complex and not fully understood.
    • Previous research has indicated associations between craniocervical angulation and sagittal jaw relationships.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the associations between dentoalveolar morphology and head and cervical column posture.
    • To explore potential compensatory adaptations in the dentoalveolar complex in response to variations in head posture.

    Main Methods:

    • A sample of 120 Danish male students (aged 22-30 years) underwent lateral cephalometric radiography.
    • Two head positions were recorded: natural head balance (self balance position) and mirror-guided position.
    • Dentoalveolar morphology was assessed using 17 variables, and postural relationships using 18 variables.

    Main Results:

    • Positive correlations were found between head position relative to the cervical column and anterior upper/lower dentoalveolar heights.
    • Inclinations of the upper and lower occlusal planes also correlated positively with head position.
    • No significant associations were observed between craniocervical angulation and alveolar prognathism or incisor inclination.

    Conclusions:

    • The observed correlations suggest dentoalveolar compensatory adaptations to variations in vertical jaw relationships.
    • These adaptations appear linked to craniocervical angulation, influencing jaw and tooth positioning.
    • Findings align with previous studies showing no association between sagittal jaw relationships and craniocervical angulation.
