Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • Identify community-level, health-service-amenable risk factors for neonatal deaths.
  • Focus on both low and normal birthweight infants in a low-resource Indonesian province.

Main Methods:

  • Matched case-control study utilizing community health center (puskesmas) data and home interviews.
  • Conditional logistic regression analysis performed using Stata 11.

Main Results:

  • Six factors significantly associated with neonatal death risk identified: neonatal complications, maternal health problems, lack of maternal knowledge of danger signs, low Apgar score, home delivery, and pregnancy complications.
  • Specific risk factors for early neonatal death (0-7 days) and normal birthweight neonates were also determined.

Conclusions:

  • Maternal knowledge of danger signs, response to infant health issues, early breastfeeding initiation, and place of delivery are key intervention points.
  • Addressing these modifiable factors holds potential for reducing neonatal mortality in resource-limited settings.
