Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental health condition marked by significant mood fluctuations, including episodes of mania and depression. Elevated energy levels, heightened mood or irritability, impulsive behavior, reduced sleep needs, rapid speech, racing thoughts, inflated self-esteem, and distractibility characterize mania. Individuals with bipolar disorder often alternate between depressive and manic states, with periods of emotional stability lasting an average of six months to a year.

Summary

Neuroimaging shows potential for identifying bipolar disorder (BD) subtypes, with consistent biomarkers found for suicidal behavior and cognitive deficits. However, high study heterogeneity currently limits its clinical application in disentangling BD dimensions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • No consistent biomarkers were found for other studied BD dimensions and subtypes.

Conclusions:

  • Neuroimaging has not yet successfully disentangled bipolar disorder subtypes and dimensions due to significant heterogeneity in study methodologies and outcomes.
  • Future research requires standardized methodologies to harness the theoretical promise of neuroimaging for understanding BD heterogeneity.
