Photoreceptors and Visual Pathways01:22

Photoreceptors and Visual Pathways

10.9K
At the molecular level, visual signals trigger transformations in photopigment molecules, resulting in changes in the photoreceptor cell's membrane potential. The photon's energy level is denoted by its wavelength, with each specific wavelength of visible light associated with a distinct color. The spectral range of visible light, classified as electromagnetic radiation, spans from 380 to 720 nm. Electromagnetic radiation wavelengths exceeding 720 nm fall under the infrared category,...

Color Vision

1.9K
Color perception begins in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Two main theories explain how colors are seen: the trichromatic theory and the opponent-process theory. The trichromatic theory, proposed by Thomas Young in 1802 and extended by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1852, suggests that color vision is based on three types of cone receptors in the retina. These cones are sensitive to different but overlapping ranges of wavelengths corresponding to red, blue, and green.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Neurology
  • Medical Diagnostics

Background:

  • Optic neuritis (ON) frequently causes vision loss and dyschromatopsia, especially in younger individuals.
  • Traditional screening for dyschromatopsia relies on Ishihara plates, which are costly and not always accessible.
  • The use of digital applications on portable devices for ON testing is increasing but lacks thorough study.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of printed Ishihara plates versus an iPad application for screening dyschromatopsia in suspected ON patients.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study evaluating Ishihara plates in both printed and iPad application formats.
  • Participants included patients with suspected optic neuritis.

Main Results:

  • Dyschromatopsia screening using a commercial iPad application demonstrated comparable efficacy to the traditional printed Ishihara plates.
  • This suggests digital screening tools are a viable alternative for clinical practice.

Conclusions:

  • iPad-based Ishihara plate applications offer a reliable method for screening dyschromatopsia in optic neuritis.
  • The findings validate the growing trend of utilizing digital tools for ophthalmic diagnostics.
