Individuals with high life satisfaction (HLS) show distinct brain activity and connectivity when processing emotional stimuli compared to those with low life satisfaction (LLS). This suggests HLS may involve better emotion regulation.

  • Participants completed a face-word relevance rating task involving self, public other, unfamiliar other faces, and positive, negative, neutral words.

  • A significant interaction between group and word valence was observed in the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC).
  • LLS individuals showed higher dmPFC activity with positive words, while HLS individuals showed higher activity with negative words.
  • Distinct functional connectivity patterns between dmPFC and emotion-related regions were found between the groups.

Conclusions:

  • High life satisfaction (HLS) may be associated with the recruitment of emotion regulation networks in response to emotional stimuli.
  • Differences in functional connectivity during self-referential processing might explain how life satisfaction influences emotional responses.
