Background:

Birth plans are tools women use to communicate preferences during childbirth.
Understanding the impact of birth plan requests on maternal satisfaction is crucial for improving care.
This study investigates the relationship between birth plan characteristics and the birth experience.

Purpose of the Study:

To categorize birth plan requests and assess their association with birth experience satisfaction.
To determine if the number of requests and their fulfillment influences maternal satisfaction.
To explore the correlation between birth plan fulfillment and women's sense of control and expectations.

Main Methods:

A sub-analysis of a prospective cohort study involving 302 women with singleton pregnancies.
Included 109 women with hard copy birth plans who completed a postdelivery survey.
Analyzed request types, fulfillment rates, and satisfaction using chi-square, Spearman correlation, and logistic regression.

Main Results:

Identified 23 unique birth plan requests, with "no intravenous analgesia" and "exclusive breastfeeding" being most common.
Highest fulfillment rates were for "avoidance of episiotomy" and "no operative vaginal delivery."
Increased request fulfillment correlated positively with overall satisfaction, met expectations, and sense of control (p < 0.05).
A high number of requests was inversely associated with overall birth experience satisfaction (p < 0.01).

Conclusions:

Higher fulfillment of birth plan requests is linked to greater maternal satisfaction.
Conversely, a large number of requests negatively impacts the birth experience.
Further research is needed to optimize birth plans for enhanced maternal satisfaction.
