Molecular Weight of Step-Growth Polymers01:08

Molecular Weight of Step-Growth Polymers

3.0K
Step growth polymerization involves bi or multifunctional monomers. Bifunctional monomers react to form linear step growth polymers, whereas multifunctional monomers react to form non-linear or branched polymers.
As the step-growth polymerization involves step-wise condensation of monomers, the molecular weight also builds up eventually. Consequently, high molecular weight polymers are obtained at the late stages of the polymerization, where 99% of monomers have been consumed.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Medical Device Technology
  • Foam Sclerotherapy

Background:

  • Venous malformations require effective treatment methods.
  • The Tessari method is a standard for sclerosing foam production.
  • Limitations exist in the standard Tessari method for extensive malformations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a modified Tessari method for producing superior sclerosing foam.
  • To compare the volume and foam half-time (FHT) of foam generated by the standard and modified Tessari methods.
  • To assess the efficacy of the modified method for treating extensive venous malformations.

Main Methods:

  • Sclerosing foam was generated using both the standard Tessari method and a modified technique.
  • The modified method involved a specific sclerosant-air ratio (1:4) and a multi-syringe setup.
  • Foam volume and FHT were measured and statistically compared between the two methods.

Main Results:

  • The modified Tessari method produced significantly larger volumes of sclerosing foam (19.7 ml) compared to the standard method (9.8 ml).
  • Foam generated by the modified method exhibited a longer foam half-time (150 s) versus the standard method (120 s), indicating greater stability.
  • Statistical analysis confirmed significant differences in both volume and FHT.

Conclusions:

  • The modified Tessari method is effective in producing a greater volume of fresh and stable sclerosing foam.
  • This enhanced foam production has the potential to improve treatment outcomes for extensive venous malformations.
  • The modified technique offers a valuable advancement in foam sclerotherapy procedures.
