Background:

Glutamine is a vital nutrient for the splanchnic bed and gastrointestinal research.
Plasma glutamine levels decrease during acute illness and stress in neonates and adults.
While beneficial in some neonatal studies, glutamine supplementation has not shown sustained advantages in adult clinical trials.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the effects of oral glutamine supplementation on gut health in aging rats.
To identify potential noninvasive markers for age-related intestinal atrophy.

Main Methods:

Oral glutamine supplementation was administered to rats before advanced age.
Gut mass and mucosal villus height were assessed.
Glutamine metabolism in enterocytes from aged rats was analyzed to identify biomarkers.

Main Results:

Oral glutamine supplementation increased gut mass and improved villus height in aging rats.
This supplementation prevented age-related gut atrophy.
Enterocytes from very old rats metabolized glutamine into citrulline.
Citrulline was identified as a noninvasive marker for age-induced intestinal atrophy.

Conclusions:

Oral glutamine supplementation can preserve gut integrity and function during aging.
Citrulline serves as a novel noninvasive biomarker for assessing intestinal atrophy in aging.
These findings have implications for managing age-related gastrointestinal decline.
