Background:

  • Subjective tinnitus is a prevalent condition with limited effective treatment options.
  • The therapeutic efficacy of electroacupuncture (EA) for subjective tinnitus remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically evaluate the effectiveness of electroacupuncture in alleviating subjective tinnitus symptoms.
  • To assess the quality of existing evidence for EA as a tinnitus treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Comprehensive literature searches were conducted across multiple English and Chinese databases.
  • Included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-RCTs were assessed for risk of bias.
  • Five studies with 322 participants were identified and analyzed.

Main Results:

  • All five included studies exhibited significant methodological weaknesses, including high risk of selection and performance bias.
  • Attrition bias was prevalent in four studies, and reporting bias was unclear in all.
  • Due to study heterogeneity and quality limitations, pooled analysis was not feasible.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence does not support the efficacy of electroacupuncture for treating subjective tinnitus.
  • High-quality, large-sample randomized controlled trials are urgently required to establish the potential benefits of EA for tinnitus.
