The National Institutes of Health funds a 5-year pan-African Bioinformatics Network.
The initiative aims to build capacity for human health genomics research in Africa.

Purpose of the Study:

To track changes in bioinformatics capacity at funded centers.
To document the impact of funding on capacity development over five years.

Main Methods:

Development of the Network Capacity Database (NetCapDB), a relational database.
Implementation of a graphical user interface for data entry and exploration.
Creation of a reporting interface for semi-automated report generation.

Main Results:

NetCapDB captures quantitative metrics of bioinformatics capacity.
The system tracks changes in these metrics over time.
User-friendly interfaces facilitate data management and reporting.

Conclusions:

NetCapDB provides a robust system for monitoring bioinformatics capacity.
