Adult tonsillectomy: postoperative pain depends on indications

Patients undergoing tonsillectomy for recurrent tonsillitis reported less postoperative pain than those without a history of tonsillitis. Pain intensity was not linked to nerve fiber density in the tonsils.

- Higher readmission rates due to dehydration were observed in the group without recurrent tonsillitis history.
- No significant differences in protein gene product (PGP) 9.5- or calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-immunoreactive nerve fiber densities were found.
Conclusions:
- Recurrent tonsillitis patients reported lower postoperative pain intensity compared to non-recurrent tonsillitis patients.
- Tonsillectomy pain severity was not correlated with the density of specific nerve fibers in the resected tonsils.
