Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) adaptive immunity in prokaryotes relies on adaptation, where foreign DNA is integrated into CRISPR arrays. Recent research clarifies the genetic and molecular mechanisms, including self-versus-non-self discrimination during spacer acquisition.
