Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Biomechanics

Background:

  • Postural control deficits and altered verticality perception are common in stroke survivors.
  • Previous studies suggest a correlation, but quantitative posturography data is lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between Subjective Postural Vertical (SPV) and Haptic Vertical (HV) with quantitative posturography and functional outcomes in stroke patients.

Main Methods:

  • 45 stroke patients underwent clinical interviews, SPV/HV assessments (roll/pitch planes), and posturography (sitting/standing, various visual/surface conditions).
  • Posturography measured postural sway under eyes open/closed and stable/unstable surface conditions.

Main Results:

  • SPV in the roll plane significantly correlated with all posturography parameters in the sitting position across all conditions.
  • Verticality perceptions showed moderate correlations with functional scales.
  • Linear regression revealed an association between speed and SPV in the roll plane under multiple posturography conditions.

Conclusions:

  • Perception of verticality is a crucial element of postural control in stroke patients.
  • Systematic evaluation of verticality perception is recommended, especially for individuals with impaired postural control.
