Summary

Intragastric balloons (IGB) offer a safe and effective weight loss solution for overweight adults who haven't succeeded with traditional methods. This study shows excellent excess weight loss and an acceptable safety profile for IGB use.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively analyze the safety and effectiveness of IGB in overweight adults.
  • To compare IGB outcomes in overweight patients with those in a cohort of obese patients.
  • To document procedural tips for safe IGB placement and removal.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, nonrandomized study involving 139 patients (26 overweight, 113 obese).
  • Outpatient, endoscopic intragastric balloon placement under sedation, filled with 550-900 mL saline solution.
  • Six months of follow-up, followed by endoscopic removal and an additional six months of observation.

  • No procedure-related complications were observed.
  • Transient symptoms of intolerance (nausea, pain) occurred in 50-95% of patients, leading to early removal in 6%.
  • Overweight patients achieved 96% excess weight loss (EWL%), significantly higher than obese patients (41% EWL%).

Conclusions:

  • Intragastric balloon placement is a safe and effective option for overweight adults who have not responded to conventional treatments.
  • The procedure demonstrates an acceptable safety profile with excellent weight loss outcomes.
  • IGB provides a viable reversible treatment option for weight management in specific patient populations.
