Summary

Endoscopic percutaneous cordotomy is feasible in sheep models for treating intractable pain. This minimally invasive technique shows promise for future clinical applications in pain management.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the feasibility of endoscopic percutaneous cordotomy.
  • To assess this technique in a sheep cervical spinal cord model.

Main Methods:

  • Seven male sheep underwent the procedure.
  • A carbon dioxide laser probe was used for ablative lesioning.
  • Pain thresholds and lesion outcomes were evaluated via MRI and histopathology.

Main Results:

  • Three sheep experienced ipsilateral hemiparesis.
  • Pain tolerance tests showed varied responses in the remaining four sheep (stages 0-3).

Conclusions:

  • Endoscopic cordotomy is a viable technique in a sheep model.
  • This supports further research into minimally invasive treatments for intractable pain.
