Interleukin 31 (IL-31) is elevated in asthma patients, found in serum and lung lavage fluid. Higher IL-31 levels correlate with asthma severity, suggesting its role in allergic airway inflammation.
Area of Science:
- Immunology
- Respiratory Medicine
- Allergology
Background:
- Interleukin 31 (IL-31) is a T helper type 2 cytokine implicated in allergic disease pathogenesis.
- The specific role of IL-31 in human asthma requires further elucidation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To quantify IL-31 levels in serum, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and bronchial tissue of asthma patients and healthy controls.
- To investigate the correlation between IL-31 levels and asthma severity.
Main Methods:
- Serum IL-31 levels were measured in 44 asthma patients and 22 controls.
- BALF and bronchial tissue were collected via bronchoscopy from a subset of subjects (9 asthmatics, 5 controls).
- IL-31, IL-31RA, and OSMR expression was analyzed in bronchial tissue.
Main Results:
- Serum and BALF IL-31 levels were significantly higher in asthma patients compared to controls.
- IL-31 and its receptor components (IL-31RA, OSMR) expression was more pronounced in severe asthma bronchial tissue.
- Serum IL-31 positively correlated with Th2 cytokines (IL-5, IL-13, TSLP), asthma severity, and total IgE.
- Serum IL-31 inversely correlated with asthma control and FEV1.
Conclusions:
- IL-31 is significantly elevated in asthma patients.
- IL-31 and its receptors are upregulated in severe asthma, particularly in bronchial tissue.
- IL-31 plays a crucial role in asthma pathogenesis and severity.

Asthma: Pathogenesis and Management
Asthma is classified as allergic and non-allergic. Allergens such as dust mites, pollen, and pet dander trigger allergic asthma, while factors like cold air, intense emotions, or exercise can induce non-allergic asthma.
