Background:

  • Cross-border firing incidents are increasingly common, causing significant anxiety for medical professionals and governments.
  • There is a need for strategies to minimize victim suffering, including understanding injury patterns and improving pre-hospital and tertiary care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the patterns of injuries, mortality, and morbidity resulting from cross-border firing incidents.
  • To identify deficiencies in pre-hospital management and propose improvements.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study of 68 patients injured by cross-border firing in October 2014 at GMCH, Jammu.
  • Data collected included cause of injury, organ system involvement, mortality causes, and pre-hospital care assessment.

Main Results:

  • Shrapnel and indirect trauma were the primary causes of injury.
  • Abdominal and thoracic injuries were the most frequent causes of mortality.
  • Key injuries included extremity trauma (20), chest trauma (14), and abdominal injuries (11).

Conclusions:
