Detection of Black Holes01:10

Detection of Black Holes

2.6K
Although black holes were theoretically postulated in the 1920s, they remained outside the domain of observational astronomy until the 1970s.
Their closest cousins are neutron stars, which are composed almost entirely of neutrons packed against each other, making them extremely dense. A neutron star has the same mass as the Sun but its diameter is only a few kilometers. Therefore, the escape velocity from their surface is close to the speed of light.
Not until the 1960s, when the first neutron...

What is Matter?01:13

What is Matter?

89.1K
The substance of the universe—from a grain of sand to a star—is called matter. Scientists define matter as anything that occupies space and has mass. An object’s mass and its weight are related concepts, but not quite the same. An object’s mass is the amount of matter contained in the object and is the same whether that object is on Earth or in the zero-gravity environment of outer space. An object’s weight, on the other hand, is its mass as affected by the pull of...

Magnetic Susceptibility and Permeability01:31

Magnetic Susceptibility and Permeability

2.7K
In linear magnetic materials, like paramagnets and diamagnets, magnetization is proportional to the magnetic field intensity. The constant of proportionality, a dimensionless number, is called magnetic susceptibility. The value of the susceptibility depends on the type of material.
When diamagnetic materials are placed under an external magnetic field, the moments opposite to the field are induced. Hence, the susceptibility for diamagnets has a minimal negative value of 10-5–10-6. Since...

Gravitation Between Spherically Symmetric Masses01:14

Gravitation Between Spherically Symmetric Masses

1.5K
The gravitational potential energy between two spherically symmetric bodies can be calculated from the masses and the distance between the bodies, assuming that the center of mass is concentrated at the respective centers of the bodies.

Diamagnetism01:26

Diamagnetism

3.3K
Materials consisting of paired electrons have zero net magnetic moments. However, when these materials are placed under an external magnetic field, the moments opposite to the field are induced. Such materials are called diamagnets. Diamagnetism is the response of the diamagnets when placed in an external magnetic field.
Diamagnetism was discovered by Anton Brugmans in 1778 when he observed that bismuth gets repelled by magnetic fields, thus theorizing that diamagnets get repelled by magnets....

Momentum And Radiation Pressure01:20

Momentum And Radiation Pressure

2.6K
An object absorbing an electromagnetic wave would experience a force in the direction of propagation of the wave. This force occurs because electromagnetic waves contain and transport momentum. The force accounts for the wave's radiation pressure exerted on the object. Maxwell's prediction was confirmed in 1903 by Nichols and Hull by precisely measuring radiation pressures with a torsion balance. The measuring instrument had mirrors suspended from a fiber kept inside a glass container.

Summary

The Dark Triad traits (Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy) show distinct links to personality. Machiavellianism and psychopathy correlate with low self-directedness and cooperativeness, unlike narcissism.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Personality Science
  • Dark Psychology

Background:

  • Research on the Dark Triad (Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy) shows inconsistent associations with temperament traits.
  • A common core of uncooperativeness is observed across these malevolent character traits.
  • Debate exists whether the Dark Triad is a unified construct or distinct traits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how individuals high in each Dark Triad trait differ in Cloninger's "light" character traits: self-directedness, cooperativeness, and self-transcendence.
  • To explore associations between individuals' dark and light character profiles.
  • To propose a "dark cube" model for comparing individuals across eight dark profiles.

Main Methods:

  • 997 participants from Amazon Mechanical Turk completed the Short Dark Triad and Short Character Inventory.
  • Participants were categorized into eight dark and eight light profiles based on trait scores.
  • Three-way interaction regression analyses and t-tests were used to compare light traits across dark profiles.

Main Results:

  • High Machiavellianism and psychopathy correlated with low self-directedness and cooperativeness.
  • High narcissism correlated with high self-directedness.
  • Individuals low in dark traits were more cooperative; those high in dark traits were less cooperative.

Conclusions:

  • Machiavellianism and psychopathy share a unified, non-agentic, and uncooperative character profile.
  • Narcissism presents a unique profile with high agency, and potentially high spirituality when other dark traits are also high.
  • The Dark Triad may function more as a dyad (Machiavellianism/psychopathy vs. narcissism) based on its associations with positive character traits.
