Chromosomal abnormalities, including loss of the Y chromosome, were found in some benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients. However, these changes are not considered diagnostic for BPH and may be linked to aging.

Background:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in aging men.
  • Chromosomal abnormalities have been observed in various age-related diseases.
  • Investigating chromosomal changes in BPH may offer insights into disease mechanisms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate chromosomal abnormalities in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
  • To determine if specific chromosomal changes are associated with BPH.
  • To explore the potential relationship between chromosomal alterations and BPH characteristics.

Main Methods:

  • Conventional cytogenetic analysis was performed on peripheral blood samples from 53 BPH patients.
  • Patients underwent standard clinical evaluations, including medical history, digital rectal examination, PSA measurement, and prostate volume assessment.
  • One patient with prostate cancer was excluded from the cytogenetic analysis.

Main Results:

  • Chromosomal abnormalities were detected in 9.4% of BPH patients.
  • Loss of the Y chromosome was the most frequent abnormality, observed in 5.7% of cases.
  • No statistically significant correlation was found between age, PSA levels, prostate volume, and chromosomal changes.

Conclusions:

  • Loss of the Y chromosome is the primary chromosomal abnormality observed in BPH patients in this study.
  • The observed coexistence of Y chromosome loss and BPH did not reach statistical significance.
  • Loss of the Y chromosome is not considered a relevant diagnostic marker for BPH, unlike its association with prostate cancer; it may be related to the aging process in men.
