Background:

  • Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a hematologic malignancy.
  • Refractory MM poses a significant treatment challenge.
  • Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is a potential therapeutic option.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of allogeneic BMT in patients with refractory MM.
  • To assess complete remission rates and overall survival post-transplant.

Main Methods:

  • Seventeen patients with refractory MM received HLA-matched, MLC-negative sibling donor bone marrow transplants.
  • Conditioning regimens included total body irradiation and high-dose chemotherapy (cyclophosphamide with melphalan or BCNU).

  • Seven patients achieved complete remission (CR), including 6 responders and 1 with advanced refractory MM.

  • While transplant-related mortality was observed, long-term survival and remission are achievable.
  • Further research is warranted to optimize BMT protocols for refractory MM.
