Summary

Achlorhydria, a condition of no stomach acid secretion, does not impact zinc absorption. Studies show zinc uptake from both solutions and meals is similar in patients with achlorhydria compared to healthy individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate zinc absorption in patients with achlorhydria.
  • To determine if achlorhydria affects zinc bioavailability from a water solution and a test meal.

Main Methods:

  • Eight patients with achlorhydria were studied.
  • Zinc absorption was assessed using 65Zn-labeled zinc sulfate solution and a test meal.
  • Whole-body retention of 65Zn was measured to quantify absorption.

Main Results:

  • Zinc absorption from a water solution was 68% ± 16%.
  • Zinc absorption from a test meal was 33% ± 10%.
  • These absorption rates did not significantly differ from control subjects.

Conclusions:

  • Achlorhydria does not appear to impair zinc absorption.
  • Gastric acid secretion may not be a critical factor for zinc bioavailability.
