Persisting Rickettsia typhi Causes Fatal Central Nervous System Inflammation

Rickettsia typhi causes endemic typhus. This study found R. typhi persists long-term in the central nervous system of immunocompromised mice, leading to lethal neurological disorders and reappearance of the bacteria.
