The Availability Heuristic

7.3K
A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Summary

Child protective services reports in Montreal show varied geographic rates by ethnocultural group. Territorial factors significantly impact reporting for non-visible minority children but less so for Black and other minority children.

Area of Science:

  • Child welfare research
  • Sociology
  • Public health

Background:

  • Child protective services (CPS) report rates can vary geographically.
  • Ethnocultural disparities in CPS involvement are a significant concern.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To map the geographic distribution of CPS report rates for children by ethnocultural group in Montreal.
  • To assess the influence of territorial characteristics on these rates across different groups.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 505 Montreal census tracts using complete data.
  • Mapping of reporting rates and territorial characteristics (e.g., poverty).
  • Application of multiple linear regression and geographically weighted regression.

Main Results:

  • Significant geographic variation in reporting rates observed across ethnocultural groups.
  • Black children exhibited the highest reporting rates.
  • Territorial factors explained 51% of variance for non-visible minority children, but only 18% for Black and other minority children.

Conclusions:

  • Standard territorial risk factors have unequal influence across ethnocultural groups in Montreal.
  • Aggregated analysis of all children underestimates group-specific differences.
  • Improving services for vulnerable families, including visible minorities, requires understanding local dynamics.
