Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is not a risk factor for cryptogenic axonal polyneuropathy. This study found no increased prevalence of COPD in patients with polyneuropathy, suggesting no direct association.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Pulmonology
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Polyneuropathy is a potential extrapulmonary manifestation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
- An increased prevalence of COPD would be expected in patients diagnosed with cryptogenic axonal polyneuropathy if it were a complication.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cryptogenic axonal polyneuropathy.
- To determine if COPD is a risk factor for developing polyneuropathy.
Main Methods:
- A prospective case-control study was conducted.
- 345 patients with cryptogenic axonal polyneuropathy and 465 controls were included.
- COPD diagnosis was assessed via questionnaire and physician verification, with severity classified by Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease criteria.
Main Results:
- The prevalence of COPD was similar in both the polyneuropathy and control groups (15/345 vs. 12/465).
- The odds ratio for COPD in polyneuropathy patients was 1.7 (95% CI [0.8-3.7]), which was not statistically significant.
- Adjusting for confounders did not alter the results (adjusted OR 1.7, 95% CI 0.7-4.1).
- COPD severity was comparable between the groups.
Conclusions:
- This study does not support the hypothesis that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a risk factor for cryptogenic axonal polyneuropathy.
- There is no significant association found between COPD and the development of polyneuropathy.

The primary cause for the onset of COPD is cigarette smoking and exposure to air pollution. These hazardous factors initiate a chain reaction within the lungs, resulting in chronic inflammation, damage to the airways, and a...
