Purpose of the Study:

  • A case-control study involving 42 CRS patients and 88 non-CRS controls.
  • Utilized the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI) to assess depression.
  • Correlated demographic and comorbidity factors with depression outcomes.

  • Physician-diagnosed depression rates were similar between groups (6% CRS vs. 9% controls).
  • BDI-detected depression was significantly higher in CRS patients (31% vs. 14.8%, p=0.031).
  • Higher BDI scores in CRS patients persisted after controlling for asthma, allergies, and aspirin sensitivity. Depression was higher in CRS patients without polyps (38% vs. 14.8%, p=0.048). Somatic BDI subscale scores were significantly worse in CRS patients (p=0.004).

Conclusions:

  • Depression is likely more prevalent in CRS patients than previously recognized.
  • Patients with CRS, especially those without polyps, may have higher rates of undiagnosed depression.
  • Elevated somatic symptoms of depression in CRS patients may influence treatment outcomes.
