A rare case of aortic arch coarctation with post-coarctation aneurysm in an infant presented with severe left ventricular dysfunction. Surgical repair led to significant improvement in heart function by the fourth post-operative month.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Pediatric Surgery
- Congenital Heart Disease
Background:
- Aortic arch coarctation is a narrowing of the aorta, often diagnosed in infancy.
- Post-coarctation aneurysm, a dilation distal to the coarctation, is an uncommon complication, especially in neonates.
- Severe left ventricular dysfunction can be a critical manifestation in infants with complex aortic arch anomalies.
Observation:
- A 3-month-old infant presented asymptomatically with severe left ventricular dysfunction.
- The infant had a rare combination of aortic arch coarctation and a post-coarctation aneurysm.
- Echocardiography revealed significantly impaired systolic function of the left ventricle.
Findings:
- Surgical repair of the aortic arch coarctation and aneurysm was successfully performed.
- Post-operatively, the infant's left ventricular ejection fraction showed marked improvement.
- Cardiac function normalized by the 4th post-operative month, indicating successful recovery.
Implications:
- This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis and surgical intervention for rare congenital heart defects.
- Prompt surgical management can reverse severe left ventricular dysfunction in infants with complex aortic anomalies.
- Successful repair of aortic arch coarctation with aneurysm can lead to complete cardiac recovery in pediatric patients.
