Purpose of the Study:

  • Compare fatigue mechanisms between TS and ISR resistance exercise configurations.
  • Measure central, peripheral, cortical, hemodynamic, and cardiovascular responses.

Main Methods:

  • 11 subjects underwent isometric knee extension using TS and ISR.
  • Evaluated voluntary activation, twitch amplitude, low-frequency fatigue, M-wave, MEP, SICI, ICF, and heart rate variability.
  • Monitored heart rate, blood pressure, and rate pressure product during exercise.

Main Results:

  • ISR showed significantly lower decreases in voluntary activation and single twitch amplitude compared to TS.
  • Low-frequency fatigue and short intracortical inhibition were reduced in TS but not ISR.
  • Rate pressure product was higher during TS exercise, correlating with central fatigue.

Conclusions:

  • ISR configuration results in reduced central and peripheral fatigue.
  • ISR also leads to lower cardiovascular stress compared to TS.
  • Set configuration is a critical factor influencing neuromuscular and cardiovascular responses in resistance training.
