Skin Diseases and Disorders01:23

Skin Diseases and Disorders

6.1K
Skin is the first line of defense and encounters a variety of microbes. Some pathogenic strains are often the cause of a broad range of infections of the skin and other body systems. These conditions can affect people of all ages and may have different causes, including genetic factors, infections, autoimmune reactions, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices.
Gram-positive Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. are responsible for many of the most common skin infections. However, many...

Autoimmune Disorders

2.1K
Autoimmune diseases are a group of disorders in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own cells, tissues, and organs. This results from an overactive immune response against substances and tissues normally present in the body. Let's delve into the concept and mechanism of autoimmune diseases from an immune system point of view, explore different causes and examples of such diseases, and discuss potential solutions.

Psychoneuroimmunology: Diabetes and Cancer

Chronic stress has been linked to both the onset and progression of serious health conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cancer. Type 2 diabetes, a widespread chronic illness, is closely associated with obesity and insulin resistance, both of which often worsen under stress. Studies indicate that men experiencing high levels of chronic stress face a 45% higher risk of developing diabetes compared to those with minimal stress. Stress triggers physiological responses that elevate blood...

COPD: Pathogenesis and Clinical Features

2.2K
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a group of lung conditions that progressively worsen over time, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. This cluster of diseases collectively leads to a gradual and irreversible decline in lung function over time.
The primary cause for the onset of COPD is cigarette smoking and exposure to air pollution. These hazardous factors initiate a chain reaction within the lungs, resulting in chronic inflammation, damage to the airways, and a...

Psychoneuroimmunology: Cardiovascular Disease

657
Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is a multidisciplinary field that examines how psychological factors, particularly stress, interact with the immune system and impact physical health. Research in PNI has shown that chronic or traumatic stress can disrupt both the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. These disruptions contribute to serious health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases.
A key area of focus in PNI is the relationship between stress and coronary...

Drugs for Treatment of Crohn's Disease in IBD Using Immunomodulatory Agents

657
Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disorder marked by chronic inflammation of the GI tract. Various treatment strategies for Crohn's disease are employed, such as immunomodulatory agents, glucocorticoids, and biologics or anti-TNF therapy. Azathioprine (Imuran), a commonly used immunomodulatory drug for Crohn's disease, is converted in the body to mercaptopurine, which inhibits purine biosynthesis and cell proliferation. Both are utilized in severe cases of Inflammatory Bowel...

Summary

Psoriasis is a multisystem inflammatory disease linked to numerous comorbidities. This review explores new associations, including osteoporosis, obstructive sleep apnea, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, highlighting the need for further research.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Rheumatology
  • Pulmonology
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Psoriasis, once viewed as a skin-only condition, is now recognized as a systemic inflammatory disease.
  • A significant majority of psoriasis patients (73%) experience at least one comorbidity.
  • Established comorbidities include inflammatory bowel disease, uveitis, psychiatric disorders, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current literature on emerging comorbidities associated with psoriasis.
  • To examine the potential links between psoriasis and osteoporosis, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of existing scientific literature.

  • Analysis of studies investigating associations between psoriasis and osteoporosis, OSA, and COPD.
  • Identification of common risk factors and potential confounders.
  • Main Results:

    • Evidence suggests a possible association between psoriasis and osteoporosis, particularly in males.
    • Psoriasis and COPD share common risk factors like obesity, smoking, and physical inactivity, potentially confounding their association.
    • Current data indicate a potential link between psoriasis and OSA, but studies are limited by small sample sizes and short follow-up.

    Conclusions:

    • Further prospective studies are needed to establish causality between psoriasis and these newly identified comorbidities, controlling for confounding factors.
    • The systemic inflammatory nature of psoriasis likely underlies its association with various multisystemic conditions.
