    Summary

An incidental abnormal shadow on a chest X-ray revealed an ectopic right kidney in a 37-year-old woman. This case highlights the importance of considering renal anomalies in thoracic imaging findings.

    Area of Science:

    • Nephrology
    • Radiology
    • Anatomical Variations

    Background:

    • Incidental findings on routine imaging require thorough investigation.
    • Ectopic kidneys, or kidneys located outside their normal position, can present asymptomatically.
    • Thoracic imaging may reveal unexpected abdominal organ malpositions.

    Observation:

    • A 37-year-old woman presented with an abnormal shadow in the right thorax found during a mass roentgenographic survey.
    • A posterior thoracic mass with a convex superior margin was noted on a chest roentgenogram.
    • Computed tomography (CT) with contrast and intravenous pyelography confirmed the ectopic high location of the right kidney.

    Findings:

    • The right kidney was identified in an unusually high thoracic position.
    • Renal arteriography confirmed the right renal artery originated normally from the abdominal aorta.
    • Renal function tests were within normal limits, indicating preserved kidney function despite malposition.

    Implications:

    • This case underscores the diagnostic value of cross-sectional imaging in identifying congenital anomalies.
    • Ectopic kidneys, even when asymptomatic and incidentally discovered, require accurate diagnosis and documentation.
    • Radiologists and clinicians should be aware of potential renal ectopia when interpreting thoracic imaging.
