TNF-α and intPLA2 genes' polymorphism in anorexia nervosa

This study found no significant genetic link between tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) gene polymorphism or intPLA2 gene polymorphism and anorexia nervosa (AN) risk in the studied population.

- To investigate the association between the -308G/A TNF-α gene polymorphism and intPLA2 gene polymorphism and the risk of developing anorexia nervosa.

- The study involved 91 patients with AN and 144 healthy controls.
- Gene polymorphisms were analyzed using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method.
- Specific polymorphisms studied included the -308G/A substitution in the TNF-α promoter region and a polymorphism in intron 1 of the intPLA2 gene.
Main Results:
- No statistically significant differences were found in the frequencies of genotypes or alleles for the -308G/A TNF-α polymorphism between AN patients and controls (P = 0.106 for genotypes, P = 0.076 for alleles).
- Analysis of subgroups within the AN cohort also revealed no significant differences in TNF-α polymorphism frequencies.
- Similarly, no statistically significant differences were observed in the frequencies of genotypes or alleles for the intPLA2 gene polymorphism between the AN group and controls (P = 0.300 for genotypes, P = 0.331 for alleles), including subgroup analyses.
Conclusions:
- The study found no statistically relevant association between the -308G/A TNF-α gene polymorphism and anorexia nervosa.
- No association was identified between the studied intPLA2 gene polymorphism and the risk of anorexia nervosa.
