Summary

A woman developed squamous-cell carcinoma in situ after prolonged ultraviolet C (UVC) radiation exposure. This case highlights UVC radiation as a potential risk factor for non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) as its use increases.

Background:

  • Atopic dermatitis and ichthyosis vulgaris are common chronic inflammatory skin conditions.
  • Ultraviolet C (UVC) radiation is increasingly used for antimicrobial purposes.
  • Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) encompasses various skin malignancies, with squamous-cell carcinoma being a common type.

Observation:

  • A 30-year-old woman with pre-existing atopic dermatitis and ichthyosis vulgaris presented with a persistent erythematous, scaly plaque on her right hand.
  • The plaque developed three years after a laboratory accident involving prolonged accidental exposure to UVC radiation.
  • Initial diagnosis was eczematous dermatitis, but histopathological examination revealed squamous-cell carcinoma in situ.

Findings:

  • This case represents the first documented instance of NMSC developing in a skin area with documented acute UVC radiation exposure.
