Background:
- Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a complex inflammatory bowel disease with genetic and environmental factors.
- Interleukin-22 (IL-22), an immune cytokine, is implicated in inflammatory conditions.

Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the frequency of IL-22 gene polymorphisms in Mexican UC patients.
- To determine if specific IL-22 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with UC development in this population.

- A case-control study involving 199 Mexican UC patients and 697 healthy Mexican controls.
- DNA extraction from blood samples for genotyping.

- No significant differences in the frequencies of IL-22 gene or genotype variants (rs2227485, rs2272478, rs2227491) were observed between UC patients and controls.
- No association was found between these IL-22 SNPs and the clinical characteristics of ulcerative colitis.
Conclusions:
- The studied IL-22 polymorphisms (rs2227485, rs2272478, rs2227491) are not associated with the development of ulcerative colitis in the Mexican population.
- These findings suggest IL-22 SNPs may not be significant risk factors for UC in this demographic.
