This study identifies 39 change-making strategies used by social entrepreneurs (SE). It reveals six established meta-SE strategies and introduces four novel ones, advancing SE strategy understanding.

Background:

Social entrepreneurship (SE) research is growing, yet SE strategies are not well understood.
Existing research on social activism, social change, and empowerment models provides a foundation for exploring SE strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore, classify, and validate the strategies employed by a large cohort of social entrepreneurs.
To develop a comprehensive model of social entrepreneurship strategies.

Main Methods:

Topic modeling was used to analyze the strategy profiles of 2,334 social entrepreneurs affiliated with Ashoka.
Strategies were classified based on resources, specificity, and mode of participation.

Main Results:

A total of 39 distinct change-making strategies were identified.
Strategies varied across resources (material vs. symbolic), specificity (general vs. specific), and participation (mass vs. elite).
Six meta-SE strategies were identified, along with four newly recognized strategies: system reform, physical capital development, evidence-based practices, and prototyping.

Conclusions:

The findings deepen the understanding of social entrepreneurship strategies.
A comprehensive model of SE strategies is proposed, contributing to theory, practice, and policy-making in the field.
