Hepatitis B and D viruses replication interference: Influence of hepatitis B genotype

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and Hepatitis D virus (HDV) replication interference is dependent on the HBV genotype. This interference is more pronounced in patients with HBV genotype A compared to genotypes D or E.

Main Methods:
- A transversal study was conducted on 68 CHD patients (37 HIV-positive) and 49 chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients (22 HIV-positive).
- Serum HBsAg titers, HBV-DNA, and HDV-RNA levels were quantified using specific assays (Monolisa HBsAg Ultra, Roche Cobas TaqMan, in-house qRT-PCR).
- HBV genotyping was performed using line immunoassay (LiPA) and confirmed with nested PCR and sequence analysis where necessary.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in HBV-DNA levels were observed among CHB patients with different HBV genotypes.
- In CHD patients, HBV-DNA levels were significantly lower in those with HBV genotype A compared to HBV genotype D, irrespective of HIV status.
- HBsAg titers did not show significant differences between CHD patients infected with HBV genotypes A or D.
Conclusions:
- Viral replication interference between HBV and HDV is dependent on the HBV genotype.
- This interference is more pronounced in patients infected with HBV genotype A than with HBV genotypes D or E.
- The findings highlight the need to consider HBV genotype when assessing viral load and incidence in HDV-infected patients.
