1Special Care Unit for Preterm Infants, First City Hospital, Sofia, Bulgaria.
Insights
This review covers neonatal blood pressure, discussing its measurement, normal values, and the significance of hypotension and hypertension in term and preterm infants. Understanding these hemodynamic changes is crucial for diagnosis and treatment in newborns.
Area of Science:
- Neonatal physiology and pathophysiology
- Pediatric cardiology
- Clinical diagnostics
Background:
- Neonatal blood pressure monitoring is essential for identifying potential health issues.
- Understanding normal blood pressure ranges in newborns is critical for accurate diagnosis.
- Deviations in blood pressure can indicate serious underlying conditions in infants.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review the physiological and pathophysiological aspects of blood pressure in the neonatal period.
- To highlight the diagnostic importance of blood pressure changes in term and preterm infants.
- To discuss hypotension and hypertension in newborns, including causes, symptoms, and prognostic significance.
Main Methods:
- Summary of various blood pressure measurement techniques used in clinical settings.
- Presentation of mean blood pressure values in newborns based on age and birth weight.
- Detailed discussion of hypo- and hypertension in neonates.
Main Results:
- Mean blood pressure values are presented in tables, stratified by age, birth weight, and other factors.
- Causes, clinical symptoms, and diagnostic-prognostic significance of neonatal hypotension and hypertension are detailed.
- Emphasis on previously neglected hemodynamic aspects requiring attention.
Conclusions:
- Accurate measurement and interpretation of neonatal blood pressure are vital for clinical practice.
- Hypotension and hypertension in newborns require careful evaluation due to their diagnostic and prognostic implications.
- Further attention to hemodynamics in neonates is necessary for improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
Abstract:
Some physiological and pathophysiological aspects of blood pressure during the neonatal period are discussed in the present review as well as the growing diagnostic importance of its changes in term and preterm infants. The measurement methods, used at various clinics, are briefly summarized, drawing attention to concrete methods of reading blood pressure. The mean values of blood pressure in newborn infants are illustrated in tables according to age, weight at birth and some other factors indicated by various authors. Two pathological deviations of blood pressure are discussed in detail, namely-hypo- and hypertension in newborn infants according to the causes, clinical symptoms and their diagnostic-prognostic significance, calling the attention of neonatologists and pediatricians to some aspects of hemodynamics, which have until very recently been uncoded and diagnostically and therapeutically neglected.
